Preoperative Reminders for Surgery

Do not have anything to eat or drink for six hours prior to surgery if the surgery will be performed at the Beaufort Oral Surgery office location.
***If your surgery will be at the Surgery Center of Beaufort or Beaufort Memorial Hospital, do not have anything to eat or drink after midnight the night before your surgery is scheduled.
Patients currently taking medications for:

High blood pressure--Take your pills as normal with just a sip of water.
Diabetes--Do not take your diabetes medication or insulin the morning of your surgery unless otherwise instructed by the doctor.
Prednisone (steroids)--Double your usual dosage the day of surgery.

***If you take any other types of medications, please discuss these with the doctor at your consultation appointment.

A responsible adult must accompany the patient to our office, remain in the office during the procedure, and drive the patient home if you are going to have IV sedation.
Do not wear lipstick, jewelry, excessive makeup, nail polish, or acrylic nails on the day of surgery.
Wear your hair loose and not in a ponytail.
Wear loose-fitting, warm, and comfortable clothes.
Wear shoes that will not fall off your feet. Do not wear sandals or flip-flops.
Avoid blood-thinning medications prior to surgery only if your physician has approved it. This will be discussed in detail at your consultation appointment.
If you have an illness on the day of surgery, such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or bowel upset, please notify the office.
The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following the surgery.
If you wear hearing aids, please wear them at your surgical appointment.
No smoking for at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.
