A distinguishing part of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the ability to provide patients with outpatient anesthesia in a safe manner. An intensive part of training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is spent with the medical anesthesiology service. During this time, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon becomes competent in evaluating patients for anesthesia, delivering the anesthetic, and monitoring the patient post-operatively.
As the surgical specialists of the dental profession, we are well prepared to assess the source of pain and anxiety a patient experiences within our discipline and to appropriately administer local anesthesia, all forms of sedation, and general anesthesia. With this anesthetic technique, the patient can be provided with a very relaxed state of mind and varying degrees of amnesia throughout the procedure. This helps to decrease the overall stress of having to visit an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.
