If your Periodontist has recommended a pocket reduction procedure, it is because soft tissue pockets have developed around your teeth. These pockets are too deep to clean with daily at-home oral hygiene and a professional care routine.
During this procedure, your gum tissue is folded back and the disease causing bacteria and plaque are removed. Your gum tissue is then secured back into place. If any irregular surfaces of damaged bone are found, they can be smoothed to limit areas where disease-causing bacteria can hide.
Reducing pocket depth and eliminating existing bacteria are important to prevent damage caused by the progression of periodontal disease and to help maintain a healthy smile.
